Louie spent the next days waiting.

He winced every time his mom’s phone rang, or whenever he heard the front door. He had even prepared a cover story in case his mom spoke to Phil: He would tell her that Phil had hit him at the hockey game, because Louie had spilt his soda on him. Then, Phil had threatened him not to say anything about it. And that was why Louie had lied about the cigarettes and Liz. He had been scared and couldn’t see another way.

The reality was, of course, quite different. In reality it was Louie who had threatened Phil. But Louie felt confident his mom would believe him over Phil if she had to choose.

He hoped so, anyway.

Mom didn’t hear from Phil.

As several days passed by, Louie began to relax. The threat had seemed to work. Phil was no longer in their lives.

Louie started visiting the house on Park Road once more.

One day, as he sat in the bus, he fell asleep with his head leaning against the window. Once again, he had the strange experience of suddenly finding himself in the house and hearing a strange voice.

“Can you hear me?”

The words were spoken close to his ear, but very low and soft, as though the voice tried to talk to him without anyone else hearing it.

“Yes, I hear you,” Louie said, looking around. “But I can’t see you.”

“Don’t worry about that. We don’t have much time. You need to listen to me.”

“Who are you?”

“I’m your father, Louie—your real father.”

In his sleep, Louie frowned. The bus slowed down and turned at an intersection, making Louie’s head rock gently, but didn’t wake him up.

“I don’t have time to explain any further,” the voice whispered. “You’ll wake up in a moment. When you do, I need you to write something down. You have to write it as soon as you wake up. It’s very important.”

“All right.”

“Write this down …” The voice paused for a beat, then it said: “Don’t trust the man in blue.”

“Hey!” cried a shrill voice, and Louie jerked upright in his seat. “That was my stop! You missed my stop!”

An old lady was standing in the aisle next to Louie and waved angrily at the driver, who realized his mistake and quickly brought the bus to a halt.

“My apologies,” he called back and opened the door.

The lady mumbled something under her breath as she left the bus, dragging two full grocery bags along.

Louie sat for a moment staring at nothing. He tried to remember what the voice in his dream had said. It was something which filled him with a nagging unease. But the memory was already fading away.

“You have to write it as soon as you wake up.”

Louie searched frantically for his phone, found it, opened a new text message and stared at the screen as his thumbs hovered above the letters.

What was he supposed to write? It was important. What was it?

Come on, come on! Something about the man in blue …

Louie grunted with frustration.
